New lawn with slate chip borders and timber edging in a Cornwall front gardenLawn with sleeper edging, slate chippings and young trees in CornwallFront garden in Cornwall after new lawn installation
Overview

Turfing done properly

A good lawn depends on the ground beneath it. Turf laid on lumpy, compacted or poorly drained soil struggles, yellows and develops dips.

We clear the ground, level it and either lay new turf or reseed, depending on what suits your garden. It's often part of a wider makeover alongside fencing, walls or a clearance.

Who it's for

  • Patchy, bumpy or weed-filled lawns
  • New gardens with bare soil
  • Gardens being re-landscaped
  • Holiday homes that need a tidy lawn quickly
What happens if it's left

Uneven lawns

Dips and bumps make mowing hard and the lawn look tired.

Waterlogging

Compacted or poorly levelled ground holds water.

Weeds and moss

Thin turf on poor ground is quickly overtaken.

Wasted money

Turf laid on unprepared ground often fails.

Common mistakes we see

  • Laying turf straight onto old lawn or compacted soil
  • Skipping levelling
  • Not considering drainage

In detail

Turfing explained

“Harry and his team did a fabulous job in my garden - clearing, levelling, reseeding, fencing and even rebuilding a very old wall to make it look quite a feature.”

Preparing ground for turf

Clearing old growth and debris, levelling, and creating a good surface are what make a lawn last. We've cleared, levelled and reseeded gardens as part of larger projects.

Turf vs reseeding

Turf gives an instant result. Reseeding takes longer to establish. We'll recommend what suits your timing and garden.

Lawns in landscaped gardens

A lawn often anchors a new design, edged by beds, paths, patios or sleepers. We plan it together with the rest of the garden.

Planning guide

Planning your turfing project

Start with how you'll use the space

Before choosing materials, think about who will use the garden and when. A space for summer dining needs different sizing, shelter and access from a low-maintenance front garden or a holiday let that needs to look smart between guests. Tell us how you live and we'll shape the turfing around it.

Look honestly at the ground

Slope, soil, existing walls, hedges and drainage all affect what's possible and what it costs. In Cornwall, many gardens are steep, rocky or exposed to the coast. We assess all of this on our first visit so your quote reflects the real job: not a best-case guess that changes once work starts.

Think about the whole garden

Turfing rarely sits in isolation. It meets lawns, beds, boundaries, paths and steps. Planning these together avoids the cost of reworking levels or access later, and gives you a garden that feels designed rather than added to piece by piece.

What our customers tell us

Harry Lyall runs every job, working alongside his colleague Matt. You deal with the people doing the work, from the first visit to the finished garden, so nothing gets lost between the quote and the build.

Every turfing job is covered by a full written contract and a warranty, typically 2 years, confirmed in writing for your specific job, and by our employer's and public liability insurance. You know what's included, what it costs and what happens if anything isn't right.
