Sandstone paving path beside a rendered raised bed in a Cornwall gardenSandstone patio enclosed by rendered walls with coping stones in Cornwall
Overview

Patios done properly

A patio is often the most-used part of a garden: somewhere to eat, sit and enjoy the evening. It's also where poor workmanship shows fastest: sinking slabs, rocking stones and puddles that never drain.

Every patio we lay includes full ground preparation: excavation, a compacted sub-base, drainage and the final surface. That groundwork is what you're really paying for, because it decides whether the patio still looks right in five years.

We work in natural stone, porcelain, block paving and slabs, and we also re-grout and refresh existing patios that have seen better days.

Who it's for

  • Gardens with no usable outdoor seating area
  • Homes with an old patio that's sunk, cracked or rocking
  • Sloping gardens that need a level terrace
  • Holiday cottages that need low-maintenance outdoor space
  • Anyone extending their living space outdoors
What happens if it's left

The cost of getting it wrong

Sinking and rocking slabs

Without a compacted sub-base, slabs settle unevenly, creating trip hazards and gaps.

Standing water

A patio laid dead flat or towards the house holds water, turns green and can cause damp.

Weeds through every joint

Failing or missing grout lets weeds take hold and lets water wash out the bedding.

Costly relaying

Fixing a badly laid patio usually means lifting the whole thing and starting again.

Common mistakes we see

  • Laying slabs on sand or soil with no proper sub-base
  • Forgetting a fall to carry water away from the house
  • Choosing a surface that suits the brochure but not the garden's exposure and use

In detail

Patios explained

“Harry and Matt did another excellent job for us, re-grouting our big patio and creating a new gravel bed at the front of the house… They are a pleasure to deal with, professional and incredibly helpful.”

Patio materials compared

Natural stone gives a characterful, traditional look that suits Cornish properties. Porcelain is dense, consistent and easy to keep clean. Block paving is hard-wearing and works well where patios meet paths or driveways. Concrete slabs offer a practical, budget-conscious finish. We'll talk through how each suits your garden's use and exposure.

What full ground preparation means

We excavate to the right depth, lay and compact a sub-base, plan drainage and set falls so water runs off, then bed and lay the surface and finish the joints. Skipping any of these steps is the most common reason patios fail.

Patios on sloping ground

On a slope, a patio usually needs to be cut in or built up, with a retaining wall holding the level. We can combine patios with walls and steps to create usable terraces on hillside gardens.

Patio repairs and re-grouting

Not every patio needs replacing. Where the base is sound, re-grouting can restore the look and stop weeds and water getting in. We've re-grouted large patios for repeat customers.

Planning guide

Planning your patios project

Start with how you'll use the space

Before choosing materials, think about who will use the garden and when. A space for summer dining needs different sizing, shelter and access from a low-maintenance front garden or a holiday let that needs to look smart between guests. Tell us how you live and we'll shape the patio installation around it.

Look honestly at the ground

Slope, soil, existing walls, hedges and drainage all affect what's possible and what it costs. In Cornwall, many gardens are steep, rocky or exposed to the coast. We assess all of this on our first visit so your quote reflects the real job: not a best-case guess that changes once work starts.

Think about the whole garden

Patios rarely sits in isolation. It meets lawns, beds, boundaries, paths and steps. Planning these together avoids the cost of reworking levels or access later, and gives you a garden that feels designed rather than added to piece by piece.
