Overview

Decking done properly

Decking is a fast way to add a level outdoor living area, and it's particularly useful in sloping gardens where building up a patio would mean major groundwork and walling.

We design decks around how you'll use them: dining, lounging, or simply a level platform with a view. We build them with a solid frame so they feel firm underfoot rather than bouncy.

We've built decks as part of front-garden makeovers and as part of larger hillside projects alongside retaining walls, patios and drainage.

Who it's for

  • Sloping gardens that need a level platform
  • Homes with a step down from the back door
  • Gardens with a view worth sitting out to enjoy
  • Replacing an old, rotten or unsafe deck
What happens if it's left

The cost of getting it wrong

Rot and soft boards

Poor ventilation and timber in contact with wet ground lead to rot and spongy boards.

Bounce and movement

An undersized frame flexes and loosens over time.

Slippery surfaces

Decks in shade that hold water quickly become slippery and green.

Wasted space

A deck in the wrong spot or wrong size rarely gets used.

Common mistakes we see

  • Building on a weak frame to save cost
  • Ignoring drainage and airflow beneath the deck
  • Placing the deck where it gets no sun or shelter

In detail

Decking explained

“Firstly they redecked and fenced the front garden and have recently undertaken a challenging job at the back… The results are breathtaking.”

Decking on sloping gardens

Where ground falls away, a raised deck can create a level platform supported on posts rather than relying on extensive retaining walls. On a hillside garden we built new decks alongside four sets of walls, patios and drainage to create several usable levels.

Deck or patio?

Patios suit flat ground and give a permanent, low-maintenance surface. Decks suit slopes, raised doorways and situations where building up ground would be impractical. Often the best answer is a combination; we'll advise honestly on what fits your plot.

Replacing old decking

If your existing deck is soft, rotten or unsafe, we can remove it and build a new one. We'll check the condition of the ground and drainage underneath so the new deck doesn't suffer the same fate.

Planning guide

Planning your decking project

Start with how you'll use the space

Before choosing materials, think about who will use the garden and when. A space for summer dining needs different sizing, shelter and access from a low-maintenance front garden or a holiday let that needs to look smart between guests. Tell us how you live and we'll shape the decking around it.

Look honestly at the ground

Slope, soil, existing walls, hedges and drainage all affect what's possible and what it costs. In Cornwall, many gardens are steep, rocky or exposed to the coast. We assess all of this on our first visit so your quote reflects the real job: not a best-case guess that changes once work starts.

Think about the whole garden

Decking rarely sits in isolation. It meets lawns, beds, boundaries, paths and steps. Planning these together avoids the cost of reworking levels or access later, and gives you a garden that feels designed rather than added to piece by piece.
